The overt symbolism of this key is the union between a man and a woman, relating harmoniously to each other. However, this idea overlooks other important aspects of the key. Carl Jung, the noted Swiss psychologist, maintained that each of us carries within us a masculine and a feminine side. When we balance the energy of these two life-forces, we are able to live holistically. So the male and female figures in the key may represent a balance of oneself. Additionally, the intertwined serpents represent the Caduceus, or the universal symbol for healing energy. The Lion at the top symbolizes the strength we need to allow ourselves to take flight, as represented by the lion’s wings.
